One, because of the possibilities it offers to connect with people around the globe.
Another reason is how it helps to show the different aspects of people's lives based on their status updates and messages.
Take christian singles for example. When they are single and searching, you find updates like..."Waiting for that special one" - # listening to "order my steps in your word" by Barbara Tucker.
When they meet the special one, you see... "Suddenly, it feels like heaven. love tins" *wink wink* #listening to (the songs start to change ) "power of love" by Celine Dion.
When they go out on a date.....they’ll update "Enjoying the ocean breeze with my boo"
Listening to "That's the way love goes" by Janet Jackson..
Then they have a little misunderstanding.... and the update goes "I refuse to get upset"
Status: Busy (No pings please)... No music too.
It gets tougher and someone threatens to break up....."If they want to leave, let them go"

( notice the songs are changing back to gospel)
Finally someone breaks up....then you read "Shattered but not broken. I'm a survivor- Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me"
Listening to.... "Yet still I rise", by Yolanda Adams..
But someone believes He'll come back. " My God is a miracle worker. I believe"
Listening to... " HOLD ON" by Ab.Isong
But sadly, the other person is married to someone else....., then you see " JESUS, always there when others leave..." Listening to " I give myself away" by William McDowell.
